Te Ata Hāpara Suicide Prevention Research Centre 

Te Ata Hāpara is a research centre, with nationally and internationally recognised expertise in suicide prevention research.  Our research is informed by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the lived experience of whānau. We focus on high quality evidence to inform policy and practice in the understanding of self-harm and suicide, and equity focussed outcomes. 

Suicide is a complex issue that happens because of many different things that come together. These may include a person’s life experiences of trauma and loss, genetics, psychological, social and cultural risk factors such as colonisation, loss of land, language and identity Tangata Whenua (Māori) carry an inequitable burden of suicide in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy – and solutions to prevent suicide are complex and will require a wide range of solutions, skills and collaboration at various levels.  

Our Research

Te Ata Hāpara has a focus on research that translates into real-life solutions.  We are committed to research that is informed by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the lived experience of whānau. This means that  co-design and co-creation with communities is central.  We have significant experience in transdisciplinary clinical and public health approaches to suicide prevention across universal, selected and indicated interventions for suicide and self-harm prevention.
